FAQ
Answers to the questions we hear most.
What is EZO HAZEL PLANTNER?
A web tool for planning hazelnut orchards. It helps you work out where to plant what, and how many, from the shape of your land, row and tree spacing, varieties, pollination conditions and future thinning.
Is it free?
Yes. It is free to use while it is in beta.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no sign-in and no registration. Open the page and start.
What is the difference between field map mode and tree layout mode?
Field map mode plans from the real conditions of a site: its shape, slope, exclusion zones and orientation.
Tree layout mode works out how to arrange trees from block, spacing, varieties and pollination conditions, and checks pollination and counts. Neither is better than the other; use whichever fits your goal. A layout you make can be applied to a site.
Which varieties does it support?
Fifteen varieties: Sacajawea, Yamhill, Wepster, Dorris, Jefferson, Gamma, York, Felix, Eta, Theta, Gene, Linda, Cheryl, Slate and Tonda Gentile delle Langhe (Piedmont). Variety traits, evidence and sources are available inside the tool.
How can I check pollinizer placement?
From how well varieties match (recommended / not in the table / does not pollinate), the tool calculates, for each producer tree, the pollinizer points within pollen reach. Trees with too few points are shown by color and in a list. You can see this in the Pollinizer check in tree layout mode.
What is the difference between year 1 and year 10?
Year 1 is the layout when the nursery trees are planted. Year 10 is the layout after thinning, expecting the trees to have grown. You can set how thinning is done, and compare tree counts and pollinizer share between the two.
Where are my plans and layouts saved?
Only in your own browser. They are not sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data erases them, so save a copy to a file now and then with Backup.
What formats can I export?
A drawing PDF (two pages: planting in year 1 and thinning in year 10) and a drawing PNG (the current view, high resolution). Your saved data itself can be written to a file with Backup.
Can I use it on a phone or tablet?
We recommend a desktop browser with a screen at least 1440px wide. Phones and tablets are not supported.
Is any information sent outside?
The sites and plans you make are not sent anywhere. To show fonts, maps, elevation and address search, your browser does connect to Google Fonts, the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, OpenStreetMap, Amazon Web Services and the U.S. Geological Survey, and those services can see your IP address. We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views in aggregate. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Where do I report a bug or make a request?
Email contact@ezohazel.com. Odd behavior, hard-to-use parts, features you would like: anything is welcome.
